This picture of my husband Chuck and me was taken on 17 June 2000, one of the happiest days of my life! I graduated with a Doctor of Computer Science Degree that day, and my husband had been my biggest fan and supporter throughout the gruesome three plus years to get this degree. Without him, I could not have done it! I dedicated my dissertation to him. Less than two years later, he was dead! He was only 45 years old when he died, I was widowed at 41 after more than 20 years of marriage.

Fourteen months after graduation, I looked like this! With Chuck's and Weight Watchers' help I dropped a total of 167 lbs in a little over two years. How good that felt! This picture shows me at a conference in Boston where I presented a paper on systems and test engineering.

Today, I'm single, which sounds as weird as widowed! And I gained about 100 lbs back. I'm trying to get my life back into something that resembles normalcy. But what is normalcy, and whose normalcy?
In the fall of 2002 I attended a grief workshop which was a tremendous experience. It helped me out of the fog and gave me permission to grieve at my own pace and to make changes in my life. I landed in the hospital last October with severe pulmonary embolism. Staring death in the face was certainly a very eye-opening experience, and as much as I was ready to join my husband again, it wasn't my time and I have to keep living.
I still see my therapist every week because the grief over my husband's death has opened old wounds and brought up a wealth of issues to be worked out. I have taken an unpaid leave of absence from my engineering job to be able to stay home with my animals (five dogs, eight cats) and get my health back. I have started my own home-based business in the hopes to be able to stay out of the rat race permanently and enjoy working from home. #FF3479 4011Verdana 00L

It is now July of 2006. I have quit my corporate rat race job on 2 January 2004 and not looked back since. I've had my ups and downs with my home businesses and am now focusing on just one. I'm very happy to run my business from home and have now four dogs, six cats, and a horse. Life is a wonderful adventure every single day. I have grown so much and intent not to stop. My life is a wonderful balance of peace and happiness and I'm full of gratitude! Catch up with all the news under all the topics below!
